This report has been developed under the Biogas, Biomass and Solar Trilateral Cooperation Project which has been implemented with the objectives of introducing technologies and systems to enhance the Sustainable Energy Use in the Agro-Industry (Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock industries) in Sri Lanka.
The Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) has actively contributed to low carbon initiatives in the Sri Lankan tea industry since 2017 with the support of ‘Powering Agriculture’ programme facilitated by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Under this initiative, a Carbon Neutral Tea Roadmap (CNTRM) for the tea industry has been developed by Sewin Exergy as the local consultant for the project as a pathway to realize the vision of the industry to be a sustainable and to be the first carbon neutral tea industry in the world. This integrated framework sets out the detailed programme steps including costs and benefits of different mitigation actions.
The ‘Tea Sector Energy Efficiency Improvement Program’ was initiated in 2017 with detailed energy audits performed in two selected tea factories as sample subjects to derive the energy saving potential in the Sri Lankan Tea Sector. With the results, energy efficiency best practice guidelines were developed and conveyed to the industry through conducting two comprehensive training programs on ‘Energy Efficiency Improvement in the Tea Industry’ with the participation of over 50 tea factories covering the whole island. As the last stage of this program, an ‘Energy Efficiency Competition’ was organized to assess the level of implementation and practice of energy efficiency measures in these tea factories. The booklet ‘Best practice guideline for tea sector energy efficiency improvement’ was published (in printed and digital formats) for the advancement of the Tea Sector.
Sri Lanka Energy Efficiency Project was initiated by KRICC under the ADB technical assistance programme with the objective to improve the energy efficiency and implement demand side management in Sri Lanka covering all institutional and retail energy customers. Technical assistance for the preparation of report on “Implementation of Sri Lanka Energy Efficiency Project” was provided by Sewin Exergy Solutions.
This study has been carried out to evaluate the technical and financial feasibility for enhancing the existing power generation capacity and to export the excess electricity utilizing present available bagasse during the crushing season and utilizing available biomass in economical collection radius during off season.
SEWIN EXERGY SOLUTIONS (PVT) LTD conducted an analysis on steam turbine unit of co-generation facility at Teejay Lanka PLC, Avissawella on request made by the company due to system failure. This analysis was requested in order to get an independent opinion on whether the steam turbine unit should be repaired or not or operate the facility without a steam turbine unit. Further, Sewin team conducted an analysis on whether the excess steam generation of boiler can be supplied to nearby facility/factory. Findings and results were submitted along with the recommendations to repair the system effectively.
